Melton Mowbray

Captain's Day
24 July 2026

Saxilby Golf Society ventured to Melton Mowbray for Captain's Day.

A new course for many and a healthy turn out of 28 Members took to the first tee.

The fairways were looking a little parched from the recent dry spell so there was plenty of run on the fairways and with excellent greens scoring was expected to be high.

What was probably not expected and the fact not one person bet on him to win it was the veterans of all veterans Alf Shaw who came first with a remarkable 42 points. Alf defied his years to take home the Captains Day Trophy.

With Alf in the final group it looked like David Beech would claim his maiden society victory having registered 40 points. David's three no scoring holes being at a cost.

Ian Waite on countback took third place from both Neil Hodson and John Brogan all scoring 38 points.

A further 16 players achieved scores of over 30 points on a high scoring day.

David Beech registered the only two ball of the day. While nearest the pins went the way of Harvey Benson, Stuart Fieldson, Paul Stafford, Neil Hodson and Sue Lynes.

A good day was complete when Sue was in the winning team prize with playing partners John Reed, Martyn Lynes and Alf.

A lovely meal was enjoyed in the clubhouse before Captain Steve presented the prizes to all the players on a great if not another rather warm day on the Society's latest venture.

Official photographer Nick McDonald was present and i'm sure some amazing action shots will be on the Society website very soon.
Many thanks to Nick and it was also pleasing to see Andrew Doe join us pre tee off. After a few months out the game he hopes to return to the fairways after injury in the Societies August fixture.

Many thanks to Rob Wilson MD of JCB[TC Harrison] who sponsored the day.

August 21st sees a return to Grimsby Golf Club for the Shaw/Brown Trophy. Maybe to much to ask Alf to get back to back wins.

The Society would like to thank Simon Croft of Croft Carpets for his continued sponsorship of thes event the Societies longest running competition.
