Matlock Away Match

Saxilby GS v Matlock GC
11 August 2023

Saxilby Golf Society played the return fixture at Matlock  but once again came up short.

It is 18 years since the fixture was set up in memory of John Armstrong who worked at Tarmac with Ian Waite and was avid Member of the Society.

With the home fixture resulting in a 2-2 draw and 177 points a piece hopes were that the Society might win at  Matlock for the first time.

Once again course management is vital and certainly home advantage counts on the undulating course that presents a few climbs not to mention tricky greens.

Saxilby made one change from the home fixture with Ray Caines replacing Jim Welch it was Ray’s first trip to Matlock for 14 years. Harvey, Michael and Clive it was there first visit.

The opening pair of Clive and Gary succumbed to the two Paul’s 54-38 with the veteran duo of Ray and Ron going down 41-36 to Ian and John. Hopes we dashed that the young guns Harvey and Michael would stop the rot were dashed when Pete and Tony both recorded two’s at the 10th for 8 points and there lead was dashed. Eventually going down 54-51. If was left for Ernie and Keith to stop the whitewash and this was done with a 54-51 win. So a 3-1 win for Matlock and a 200 to 179 points total.

Nearest the pins went to  Ian Waite with 2, Ernie, Michael and Roger.

So another good day in the Derbyshire hills and another defeat but the friendship we have built with Matlock is second to none and hope brings eternal that we will one day win at Matlock.
